Vintage Rural Shop Cabinet

A remarkable piece of old rural Chinese furniture, this substantial shop cabinet has the scale, texture and beautifully imperfect surface that we look for in our one off pieces.

Originally designed as practical storage, the cabinet combines a generous open display shelf with lattice fronted cupboards, drawers and enclosed storage below. The open latticework is characteristic of traditional Chinese food and merchant cabinets, allowing air to circulate through the interior whilst providing accessible storage.

What makes this piece particularly special is its extraordinary original surface. Layers of aged off-white paint have worn naturally over decades of use, exposing areas of warm timber beneath and creating a richly textured, almost chalky patina. Chips, rubbed edges, old marks, variations in colour and visible grain have all been retained rather than restored away.

Dark metal ring handles provide a simple contrast to the pale finish, while the geometric latticework gives the otherwise substantial cabinet a lighter architectural quality.

At 145cm wide, it has real presence without the height of a traditional tall Chinese cabinet. We particularly love it in a kitchen or dining room, where the open upper section can be styled with pottery, bowls and collected objects. Equally striking in a large hallway or living space, it offers an unusual combination of display and concealed storage.

This is not a piece intended to look newly made. Its worn paint, knocks, marks and irregularities are integral to its character and are evidence of a long working life.
