Vintage Fretwork Door Cupboard

A striking vintage lattice fronted cabinet from rural Shanxi Province, China, crafted in solid elm and rich in the surface character that comes only with age and use.

The tall, architectural form is defined by a pair of intricately constructed geometric lattice doors, finished with simple iron ring pulls and set above two lower drawers. Behind the doors, generous shelving offers practical storage while the open latticework gives the piece a lighter, more refined presence than a conventional solid fronted cupboard.

Shanxi has a long tradition of provincial furniture making, with elm widely used for its strength, durability and distinctive grain. Cabinets of this style were made as practical household pieces, designed to store everyday items while allowing air to circulate through the lattice fronts.

This example has a beautifully muted, naturally aged finish, with soft silvery tones, darker traces within the grain and the knocks, marks and irregularities expected from a piece that has lived a previous life. These details are not considered faults; they are an intrinsic part of its provenance and give the cabinet its individuality.

Its restrained palette and strong geometric structure make it particularly easy to place within a contemporary interior. Style it in a living room, dining space, hallway or bedroom, either left largely unadorned or layered with ceramics, baskets and sculptural objects.

A substantial, highly decorative piece of rural Chinese furniture with real presence, materiality and history.

Condition: Vintage. Expect age related knocks, wear, tonal variation and surface imperfections consistent with its history and previous use.

As a vintage piece, variations in colour, surface, construction, old repairs, knocks and signs of age are to be expected and form part of its individual character.
