Vintage Dogon Granary Door, Mali

A striking vintage Dogon carved door from Mali, mounted on a simple black metal stand to present it as a sculptural object.

Traditionally, carved wooden doors and shutters such as these were used across Dogon communities to secure granaries and storage spaces. Their surfaces were often richly worked with stylised human figures, geometric forms and symbolic imagery, creating objects that combined everyday function with a strong sense of cultural identity and protection.

This characterful example is carved in deep relief with repeated abstracted figures across its two-panelled front, alongside its original-style wooden locking detail. The surface has been softened and worn over time, revealing layers of patina, tool marks, knocks, splits and variations in the timber that give the piece its exceptional presence.

Now raised on a black metal stand, it becomes an intriguing piece of collected art for the interior. Style it on a console, sideboard or open shelving where the depth of the carving and beautifully aged wood can be appreciated at close range. Particularly effective within an earthy, textural scheme alongside aged ceramics, reclaimed timber and other pieces with provenance.

Each vintage piece is individual and its irregularities, marks and signs of age form an integral part of its character.
