Original Sulawesi Toraja Carved Panel
Original Sulawesi Toraja Carved Panel
A striking carved panel from the Toraja people of Sulawesi, Indonesia, with a richly worked surface, bold geometric patterning and layers of deep black, red and worn natural timber. The repeated scroll and border motifs give the piece a strong architectural presence, making it ideal as wall art within a considered interior.
Toraja carved panels are traditionally associated with tongkonan, the ancestral houses of the Toraja people. Their carved decoration, known as pa’ssura’, acts as a visual language, with patterns often linked to family, status, protection, nature and ancestral belief.
In the home, this panel works beautifully as a statement piece above a console, sideboard or low cabinet, adding depth, texture and a collected feel to a room. The aged surface, worn pigment, hand carved detail and natural irregularities give it a powerful decorative quality without feeling overly polished.
A distinctive piece of Indonesian craftsmanship with sculptural detail, cultural depth and strong interior presence.
